STAFF APPLICATION
  • Here, there, and everywhere! Seriously. Our staff come from across the US, plus Canada and Israel, same as our campers.

  • Of course! We love meeting new people. In fact, Tizmoret Shoshana prides itself (herself?) on welcoming new campers and staff. You don’t have to be a Tizmoret alumna to work here.

  • Great question. The youngest staff we hire are coming out of 11th grade. At that age, you can apply for the following positions:
    a) waterfront certified lifeguard (we can help you get certified)
    b) kitchen staff
    c) mother’s helper

Staff coming out of 12th grade can apply for all of the above positions plus counselor.

General positions that anyone post-sem can apply for:
    -counselor
    -kitchen staff
    -mother’s helper
    -waterfront certified lifeguard
    -arts instructor
    -shiur instructor
    -division head
-multiplication head (kidding - just checking if you’re reading thoroughly!)
    -nurse
    -mental health pro
-lake monster (Good luck - the current lake monster has been refusing to vacate the position. Or the lake, in fact.)
    -photographer

  • Ah, the million dollar question! Campers are not permitted to have any technology at camp. Staff are, but with the following rules:
-please do not be on your phone around campers unless it is truly necessary
-under no circumstances may a camper use your phone or other device.
-only senior staff (director, division head, medical staff) may contact parents

Basically, yes, you can have your phone, but exercise common sense or this rule will change in the future.

  • Many of our jobs don’t require experience in the arts. That said, since we are a creative and performing arts camp, the majority of our staff have an interest in the arts even if it’s not their passion or they don’t have a lot of experience.

  • Yes and no. Our staff housing is very limited. This means that we try to reserve married staff for our senior staff positions. If you are applying as married staff, you need to know the following:
    a) We don’t have jobs for men. There are a number of camps within an hour’s drive of us that might be interested in hiring men, but please don’t count on a job with us.
    b) We do not have a minyan on site during the week or on Shabbos. Much as we’d love to change this, it isn’t going to change unless we can convince the site owners to build more staff housing.

  • We have a team of mothers’ helpers who provide activities and programming during the morning and afternoon, ie. the times most of our married staff are working. That said, it is NOT a full-blown staff kids day camp. In a typical year, we have anywhere from 4-8 staff kids on site per session, ranging from babies through age 7 or 8. Once a staff kid is 9 or 10, she can participate in many of our regular camp activities but will still be in her mother’s bunkhouse. Girls finishing 5th grade or higher who are staff kids are eligible to be regular campers, and must complete a camper application. We try not to have boys older than 8 at camp.

  • We do not have a staff bus. On the way TO camp, we ask that you try to arrange a carpool. If you’re flying, we can arrange pickup at Newark (EWR). For the way home, if there is space, staff may take the camper bus back to Newark (EWR).

We are happy to try to facilitate carpools. There is also a bus that goes from NYC to Hawley/Honesdale, which isn’t far from camp.

  • Single staff share bunkhouses - the older you are, the fewer bunkmates we try to give you. Typically anywhere from 4-8 staff will be in a single staff cabin.

Married staff housing is limited. There are a couple of spaces with more than one room, but the majority are one-room cabins.

In other words, you’re definitely at camp, not a hotel! ;) But there will be some sort of air conditioning installed for this summer and there are also fans.

  • Yes! When not working, staff are welcome to take part in camp activities, provided that there is space and they have the instructor’s permission to join.

  • Staff typically lead kabbalos Shabbos, and there are often zemiros sung late into the night.

On Shabbos day, we rely on staff to volunteer to help out with our camper parsha circles and Pirkei Avos groups. Resources are provided.

Staff are also welcome to attend our weekly parsha play, which is rather loosely based on the parsha. Watch out - you may find yourself impersonated when you least expect it!

Shabbos is a day to just be at camp and enjoy. Naps, conversations, walks around campus, games, zemiros - there’s something for everyone.
